Photographer Anne Cleary Breaks Down Issue 001 Cover Image
Photographer Q & A
Hi Anne! Tell us about yourself!
HiHeyHello, my name is Anne Cleary. I am a filmmaker based in Seattle, WA, happiest with a burger in one hand and a camera in the other, I strive to capture a slice of life moments like my mind remembers when I close my eyes. I feel lucky to be surrounded by a group of hilarious and talented friends, my main squeeze Sam and my furry house tiger Nina.
What does your journey with photography/ videography look like?
I grew up around cameras, shooting rolls of film and watching my dad take photos with all the old cameras at my childhood house. I’ve always been surrounded by the most incredible humans and wanted to document our experiences. I found photography as a way to keep track of life’s insane and unbelievable moments and have since become addicted to filmmaking as a way of storytelling.
Talk us through the day that you shot the cover image:
The cover image of Issue 001 was shot on a high-pressure backcountry mission with Ingrid. We were really stretching to find fresh pow for the film we were working on at the time - The Recipe. We started shooting this film late in the season and originally our concept was based on backyard adventures (the trailhead of this location is within a half hour or Ingrid’s house) and we were desperate for any bit of fresh snow that still existed. The climb up was steep, crusted over snow, so we struggled punching in kick turns.
This was the top of our ascent. I noticed the possibility of some light flare and thought I would hang back and shoot while Ingrid set the final bit of skin track. Initially I was shooting video, but the scene was so dreamy I snapped a still as well. You can see the motion version of this image in The Recipe. We ended up skiing a few laps on an untouched pow field on the backside of this peak, calling the day a success.
Is it tough working with Ingrid? She’s a total prima donna, right? (*wink wink*)
Haahaa. Ingrid is the best and incredibly humble and easy-going. I can’t emphasize enough what a go-getter she is. We have a lot of fun together -making decisions, finding stashes and getting the shot. We currently have a big project in the works we’ll be excited to share!
What are your favorite situations or adventures to film?
People are my favorite! I love humans and all our complexities and antics.
How would you describe your creative style?
I like to shoot from the hip and always be rolling. It’s all about authenticity, so if a moment passes you by and your camera is too deep in your pack, you’ve missed it.
What are you up to the rest of the winter? Any big plans?
Working on a film! Follow along and keep your eyes out - Fall 2020.
